At the beginning of May, 10,000 homes and businesses between the Willamette River and Naito Parkway running west will get new addresses. Changes to signage in the area, currently labeled Southwest Portland, will cost about $300,000. Residents and businesses will soon need to make changes of their own. The city of Portland said it will take about five years for all of the signs to be updated to reflect the new Portland district. There had been concerns of some of the local neighborhoods losing their identities as a result of sweeping changes. Sentiment has changed, however, and many have come to embrace the update. They are even creating a new South PDX website that will keep the community informed of upcoming local events.
